"No doctor makes much headway in practice if he does not treat patients as persons for whom he must feel sympathy, but many good doctors never take trouble to formulate their attitude.
Neither lack of sympathy nor ignorance of medical knowledge, is pardonable in a doctor, but it is perhaps just worth saying that whereas lack of sympathy makes illness additionally uncomfortable it is more likely to be ignorance which kills the patients.
Fortunately, there is no incompatibility between sympathy and knowledge and doctors must lay hold on as much of both as they can".
